"If I can be here and be even the tiniest part of funding research and ending a disease, that'd be something worth living for." - Tom McFarland (1956-2023) Today we remember Tom, an extraordinary volunteer who dedicated his retired years to improving the lives of people living with MS. Year after year, Tom showed up at Walk, Bike and Hike events, putting a smile on participants’ faces. He is a shining example of the vital role our volunteers play in the MS Movement. This #NationalVolunteerWeek, we celebrate all the volunteers who help make these events possible.

Our volunteers are at the heart of what we do. Last year alone, 38,000 volunteers gave their time and talent to work towards our mission — a world free of MS. We are truly grateful. Happy #NationalVolunteerWeek!

Raven Henderson remembers the time she had to use her cane on the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s MS Snowmobile Tour bus because her multiple sclerosis was upsetting her balance. A fellow passenger helped her down the bus steps and then shared a small pearl of wisdom: angels up and demons down. It was his way of telling her to lead with her better leg. “It stuck with me years later, and I always do that when I’m having trouble walking,” Henderson recalls. “That’s what the snowmobile event is about — everyone helps each other. It’s so much family, love and support.” The tour draws riders from across the country, including Florida, Texas and California, with many repeat participants, and is celebrating its 40th year. #MSNews: UCLA neurologist Dr. Rhonda Voskuhl wins 2024 John Dystel Prize for MS research. She is being recognized for her innovative research to understand mechanisms underlying sex differences in MS and advancing women’s health. Women are much more susceptible than men to developing MS. Dr. Voskuhl has conducted extensive basic and clinical research to understand why. She has made landmark discoveries related to the influence of sex hormones and sex chromosomes in laboratory models, and then translated those basic findings to the clinic.
